It Must Not Go Out

The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out. Leviticus 6:13

When everyone in the camp slept, the priests were keeping vigil. The lamps in the Tent of Meeting were to burn all night. The fire on the altar could not go out. The work of the priests was never done.

I wonder what it was like to be the one keeping watch over the altar? To be in a holy place, called to holy work, while the world slept around you? Did the Spirit meet you there? Did you sense the importance of their work? Did you pray throughout the night?

What was it like?

Lord, like the priests in the middle of the night, You seem to have called me tonight. What is it that I am to keep burning? Fill me with Your presence so I might know. Take care of my family. Restore the health of my household for we have all been under the weather. Bring us back to You. Keep the fire of Your Spirit burning continuously; do not let it go out.
