But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with it mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. Psalm 131:2
What is it to be weaned? Weaning is a process of breaking free from complete dependence on someone or something. An animal or child is weaned when solid food can replace mother's milk. Although we don't readily think of it in this context, an addict is weaned when he no longer requires the comfort of his drug of choice. Weaning is all apart of growing - physically and spiritually. If we are going to stand as independent adults, we cannot remain tied to childish things. What's the saying? "Cut the apron strings."
Yet, the truest freedom of all comes, not from independence, but complete dependence... on God. Complete dependence on Him brings a peace to one's soul that literally sets him free from the burdens of this world.
Lord, make me like a weaned child - independent from those things that would keep me from growing, from becoming the godly man I am called to be. Yet in this process of weaning me from the world, make me completely dependent on You. It is only in Your arms that I am truly free.
Still and quiet my soul.
