Demanded Songs

For there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!" Psalm 137:3

How are we ever fooled into believing the enemy? With his words he convinces us that no one can love us like he does. We buy what he has said since that awful day in the garden so long ago: "Try it; you'll like it! You, too, can be like God."

But in truth, we are nothing more than monkeys in a cage to him. Like slaves, he drives us during the day and expects songs of joy at night. Oh, there are pleasures. He knows that too many would escape if they knew the truth about him. He knows that if we saw him as he really is, he would lose us to the Emancipator. So he carries on the masquerade. He enters our days dressed in light, hiding the darkness underneath, and we too often accept his offer to dance.

Lord, protect me from the lies of the enemy. His aim is to enslave me. Yours is to save me. Through the sacrifice of Your Son, You have clothed me in righteousness. No longer do I want to dance and sing by the waters of foreign lands. You are my only hope. Free me, now and forevermore
