A Quick and Easy Trip

To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. Titus 1:15

There are times in life when the enemy's attacks seem to be the strongest. He likes to keep us in a state of doubt.

Purity is an issue about which he can cause a great deal of confusion. Either something is pure, or it is not. Either our minds and consciences are pure or they are corrupt. Either we are perfect or we are not.

Of course, we are imperfect, so we must be corrupt. And if we are corrupt, we must be like the world - forever lost in our sin. If we are forever lost, why should we even attempt to be self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined?

Wow! That was a quick and easy trip from purity to impurity - from good to evil - from life to death. What an amazing liar the enemy is! He wants us to focus on aspects of the truth. He wants us to remember that we are imperfect, so we must be lost.

What the enemy doesn't want us to remember is: GRACE. He doesn't want us to see the hope that Christ gave us - the hope of righteousness by His blood.

Lord, to read Paul's words about the characteristics required of an elder makes me feel unworthy. I feel so far away from self-control and discipline at times that I feel unqualified for service. Help me to grasp the hope that comes with the truth. No man is holy by his own action - nor will I be. Give me the strength to face the challenges of today. Give me the power to remind the enemy that the only one without hope is him. He is the one who is forever lost.

Your Grace is amazing.

Eager?

It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in the present age, while we wait for the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Titus 2:12-14

Am I saying "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions? Am I self-controlled, upright, and godly? Am I eager to do what is good? If I cannot say "Yes" to these questions, maybe I need more of God's grace.

Thank goodness, there is lots to go around!

Lord, I need Your grace to continue its work in me. I'm growing weary from the enemy's attacks. I'm behind the curve again, and feeling overwhelmed makes me vulnerable. My self-control seems to be the first thing to go. Help me to organize my days. Help me to organize my thoughts. Help me to be upright, godly, and eager to do what is good.

Self-Condemnation

You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. Titus 3:11

Jesus came to save the world, not to condemn it.

As for condemning the world - we do enough of that on our own. Our own actions condemn us.

I am perplexed this morning. Yesterday, there was a big story in the local news about a young man who plead guilty on child pornography charges. The story claimed he had almost 13,000 images on his home computer, making his the largest case ever investigated by the State Attorney General's Office. This young man's actions have condemned him. Ten years in prison and a lifetime of scorn as a registered sex offender await him.

My heart breaks for him. He is a product of an overly sexualized society.

Generally, the first question I ask is: "Where were his parents when he needed them?"

Well, I know his parents. They are members of my Sunday School class. This young man and his father were in the first group at my church to participate in a father-son event to talk about sex over eleven years ago. I know his father tried to lay a foundation of knowledge and open communication.

What happened?

Somehow along the way, he ran off track. He made choices that were disastrous.

Lord, what is happening? The enemy seems to be winning an awful lot lately. Our own actions are condemning us. So much seems out of control. Christian kids are making choices that have opened the door to worldly addictions. There has been so much talk about this generation - about the moral choices many of them are making. There have been hopes that this generation could help lead a spiritual renewal in our country. The truth is: You are the Leader of any spiritual renewal. This generation is vulnerable to the enemy's attack - just as we all are. Father, hold my friends close to Your heart. Bring renewal to their son. Only Your grace can cover our self-condemnation. Pour it out today.

Make me clean.

Prepare a Room

And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers. Philemon 22

Paul was in prison when he penned the book of Philemon. But in typical fashion, Paul was filled with hope. His physical circumstances rarely seemed to dissuade him from believing God was completely in control and caring for him every moment. Despite his chains, Paul asked Philemon to get the guest room ready for a visit.

I wonder if Philemon's guest room was used by Paul again. Even if it wasn't, I'm sure Paul's faith was unshaken.

Lord, help me to see beyond the circumstance of today into the bright future of Your design. The chains of work and debt so often keep me from believing in tomorrow. Give me a faith that rises above the stress and anxiety. Give me eyes that can see the path - eyes that can see the goal. I want to go where You lead. Show me Your way, and I will follow.

And prepare a room for me.

Those Who Will Inherit Salvation

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation. Hebrews 1:14

Can we even begin to preceive God's amazing love for us? We are the crown of His creation. Even the angels, whom we see as awesome creatures, are sent to serve us. We will inherit salvation from the very One who inherited the Name of God. His own Son died so we could live.

Why do we discount God's choice to love us?

Lord, forgive me for dishonoring Your love for me. I have always had a low opinion of myself. No matter what anyone says about my gifts and talents, it still isn't enough. Who am I hoping to please? Is there anyone whose opinion matters as much as You? And You prove Yourself daily! Help me to be diligent in my spiritual growth again. Help me to become the man You designed. The world will be impacted if I am in Your hands. Hold me close to Your breast. I long to feel Your presence.

Drifting to the One Percent

We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. Hebrews 2:1

Why is it so easy to drift away from what is really important? There is so much more to life than material things, but we find ourselves easily drawn to them. Time with family and friends is so easily replaced by commitments and the pursuit of more.

I heard an interesting statistic - that forty percent of the wealth in America belongs to one percent of the population. One percent! Yet we are raising up a generation of children who find personal worth in things!

ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of us have the opportunity to live eternal life with the Creator of all things, but most people pursue what is only available to one percent. What will become of the one percent when life is finished? In truth, things give us the illusion that we don't need God. No wonder it is so easy to drift away. Most cannot see God in anything, so what draws them? Only what is seen.

Lord, help me to see You. Help me to put my trust in You. Save the lost.
